Wonder

Wonder

Author: R.J. Palacio
Genre: Realistic Fiction

Award: Bluebonnet Award
Age: 10 and up

Wonder is one of the books that will forever stick in your life. It is a book that gives you a whole different perspective on life and the people around you. The book is about a boy named August, nicknamed Auggie, who has a deformed face due to countless surgeries and his birth defect. He had been homeschooled in his early years but his parents, especially his mom, decided to let him experience and go to an actual school where he will have classmates and a variety of teachers. Auggies journey, of course, has a lot of downs but throughout the book, his ups through his journey in 5th grade's the greatest. He struggled to make friends at first but throughout the book, real true friends come along his life. His relationship with his parents and especially his sister also developed a strong bond. He struggled with bullies but his true friends protected him in the end and he “overcometh the world”(Palacio 313) in the end, which is that he had won rich true friendship and the hearts of people despite his physical appearance. The title came from his mom acknowledging him that “You really are a wonder, Auggie. You are a wonder” (310).

This book is a wonderful book for middle school students. I will definitely let the 5th graders read this for their summer reading or even during the school year and have discussions in class. This book gives different perspectives of each character and it helps the reader see things in different views and each character’s reasons for their actions.

The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs Author/Illustrator: James Marshall Genre: Traditional Literature Ages or Grade: Pre-K to 2 nd The Three Little Pigs is a fable that falls under the genre traditional literature. It is a story about these three little pigs who are sent out “to seek their fortune” (Marshall 2). The first pig bought straws to build a house; then once he built it, a hungry wolf blew his house and ate the first pig. The second pig then got sticks and built a house with it. The hungry wolf also blew his house and then ate the second pig. The third pig was the smartest for he built his house with bricks. The wolf tried and tried to allure him to get out of the house but the pig is smart and he overcomes the hungry wolf by having him boiled and cooked when the wolf entered the pig’s chimney.       The retold of this story is very clear and simple. The illustrations are not that great but it is acceptable enough for me to put it in the book center f...
