Smile Author: Raina Telgemeier Illustrator: Stephanie Yue Genre: Non-Fiction Graphic Novel Grade: 5 th grade and up Raina is 11 years old and the story starts off when she is in 6 th grade. While playing with her friends, she tripped and knocked out her two front teeth. The story then picks up on her journey throughout school and dealing with fixing her teeth. Due to her missing teeth, she has to deal socially with her classmates and it is even harder for her to make friends. She then has to wear braces and go to appointments and treatments throughout the school year. She deals with a lot of problems such as insecurities, boys, bullying, zits, family stuff, and many more. The story then continues on her entering high school and meeting some new friends. At the end of the book, she finally had her surgery and she is now able to smile again. When he was young his master got ill and he got separated from his family. He worked in his new master’s factory. Henry grew up in the factory and years has passed and he met his wife Nancy. His family grew and grew and then he got separated from his wife and children for they got sold. Henry got depressed and was never happy till one-day henry decided to get away by pouring vitriol in his hands. He decided to send himself in a box to a place where he is free! The journey inside the box was hectic but he made it and now his is in Philadelphia. It ended with him now having a birthday which is his first day of freedom. Animals at Night Author: Melvin and Gilda Berger Genre: Non-Fiction Grade: Kindergarten and up This book is about the different kind of animals who are awake at night. First, it talks about the owl. The owls are awake at night and sleep in the day. They have eyes that see in the dark and that is when they look for their prey and eat. Another animal mentioned would be a beaver. A beaver swims and also hunts at night for their food. They build their own house by collecting sticks. The rest of the book talks about other different animals or critters that are awake at night. It ends with a drawing of a kid in his bed and says now it is your time to wake up. This is a very informative books of animals, not only their characteristics but also interesting facts. This book is easy to read especially for kindergarteners and the book mostly contains pictures and small paragraphs. It is very specific and straightforward. I find the ending uni...
