The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses

The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses

Author/Illustrator: Paul Goble
Genre: Historical Fiction
Award: The Caldecott Medal
Grade: 1st grade and up

The story is about a native girl who lived in the villages. She loved horses and taking care of them. One day, a bolt of lightning strike and thunderstorm took over the land and all the horses panicked and ran. The thunderstorm had passed and they end up lost in the middle of nowhere. The next morning the leader of the wild horse appeared to her and told her that she is welcome to live with them, and so they did. The people from the village searched for her for a year. They did see her and captured her. When she returned back to the village, she was all sad because she missed her horses and she kept hearing the stallion neighing for her to come back. She grew ill and asked that she come back to the wild horses. Her parents loved her so much that she let her go and she united with the horses and the stallion. Years passed and one day the girl did not come back to visit them. The hunters never see her again but when they saw the wild horses, there was a new beautiful mare with the horses which they believe was the girl who loved wild horses.

I really really like this book, for it is a simple story but it stands out and the story remains with you. The author really wrote a heartfelt story to those individuals who loves horses. I would recommend this to 1st graders and up because it is easy to read and understandable. The illustration in this book is very colorful. The pictures are a bunch of cut paper put together and it is mixed with paints and patterns. The book is thin and each page consist of drawings all throughout the page. I recommend this book because it is a great story and would be nice to read aloud to the class.

Red Sings from Treetops a year in colors Author: Joyce Sidman Illustrator: Pamela Zagarenski Genre: Poetry Ages or Grade: 3 rd – 5 th grade This book makes colors alive like human beings. It describes the colors having qualities and bringing them into life. This poem book goes over the four seasons which is spring, fall, winter, and summer. Red Sings from Treetops illustrations are really well illustrated because it gives the feeling of actually being in that particular season. This book is great to read to my students because they will imagine and view colors as persons and each colors have amazing unique qualities. My students can also be more aware and appreciative of colors all around us. This poem book is more for a 3 rd through 5 th grade students due to the length of the sentences and understanding. Since the illustrations looks like paper art, I will have the students do their piece of art that is based on their favorite seasons.
