A Fine Dessert

A Fine Dessert

Author: Emily Jenkins
Illustrator: Sophie Blackall
Genre: Historical Fiction
Bluebonnet book
Grade: 1st grade and up

This is a story set in 4 different centuries. The fine dessert is illustrated and passed on in different types of culture and family. It shows how people eat and live throughout the centuries. The first story is set in 1710 and it is the story about a girl and her mother in Lyme. They live in an English town and they start picking berries for their dessert. They milked the cow and began making the dessert and adding ingredients. After they cooked it they served it to their family. The second story is in 1810, and it is about a mother and a daughter who leaves in Charleston, South Carolina. The daughter picked the blackberries from the plantation garden and started baking it. They then served it to their master and the daughter and her mother hid in a closet and licked the bowl clean. The dessert is then made on another century.

This is a really insightful book because the reader gets to see how the dessert travels into four different centuries. Within the different stories, the reader will be able to understand and view the different lives of the people and how they live during that century. The story is the same on how the dessert is made but the illustrations plays a big role on how each of the century and characters are different. I would definitely read this to my class because it will the give the student a taste of history. The illustrations in this book consists of pastel and light colors. The illustrations are minimalist and are painted with water colors. There are black and white sketches on the pages when each of the characters are making the dessert. The story and the illustration blend well together and the book overall is really amazing.
