Poems to Learn by Heart

Ages or Grade: mostly 4th and 5th grade

This book consists of a lot of poems that are short and long poems. Few poems that I can read to the lower grade level would be My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson and Under the Bed by Penny Trzynka. These two poems are really simple to understand and it mainly expresses feelings and thinking of a child or reading a child’s perspective. I will definitely read these two poems to 2nd and 3rd-grade students. Most of the poems are readable for the upper-grade level such as 4th and 5th graders but there are some that are really long and the vocabulary level is too high.

I will not keep this in the reader’s shelf in the reading section but I will only bring it out and read it aloud to students. I feel like if the students read this book individually they are going to have a hard time for some of them consist of old English which is why it is a collection of poems. I will definitely read the two poems listed above to my students because it just reminds me of how I think when I was a little kid. By reading the poems aloud to them will help them relate and understand it.

    Don't forget there may be students who want to read this book whether you think the Old English is difficult or not.

When winter came, they do not have much food and are worried they are going to starve, but an old woman appeared in their home. He knew that the police will say no; therefore, he sneaked in the construction dressed up as workers with his friends. They did get in and set up the wire.
