Mrs. McBloom, CLEAN UP Your Classroom!
Illustrator: Guy Francis
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Grade: 1st grade and up
There’s always this one teacher in every school who is
always messy. Mrs. McBloom is that kind of teacher and almost everyone always
tells her to clean her classroom, even the janitors. She always has excuses and
tells everyone that it is on her to-do list. It is one week before her
retirement and another teacher is taking over which she pleads also to clean
her room. She does not know how to clean the room so she set a homework to her
class on how to clean and tidy up room 5. All the students presented to the
class an idea but one of the students, named Georgia, suggested to promote to
help on cleaning Mrs. McBlooms class. If all the citizens work hard to clean up
the room, they will get free eggs and apples and a clean tidy classroom for the
students. All the people in the town then helped and cleaned, and Georgia got
rewarded for her excellence. The town recycled the stuff that was in Mrs.
McBlooms room and sold them for her retirement getaway trip. The ending is a
picture of the teacher, who replaced Mrs. McBloom, being messy already.
I like the story of the book for it is funny and light. It
is relatable and really insightful. It states a problem and tells how it is
solved by the community. It teaches how to be a good student and be helpful of
the community. I will definitely do a read aloud of this book in my class
because it is not that long and it is very funny. While reading this book, I
will ask the students some ideas on how they will help Mrs. McBloom clean the
room or a prediction on how room number 5 will be cleaned. The illustrations
are really colorful and unique. It is like a cartoon drawing and very detailed.
It is readable for first grade students and up; therefore, it is easy for them
to read and understand. This is a light reading and a relatable story.
