The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz

Author: L. Frank Baum
Illustrator: Charles Santore
Genre: Fantasy and Sci-Fi
Grade: 4th grade and up

Dorothy lived in Kansas with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and a dog named Toto. A cyclone emerged and their house got twirled around and taken away by the cyclone. Once the cyclone was over, Dorothy and Toto walked out of the house and they ended up in a weird place. There are a lot of weird beings in the place where they landed. In order to get back home to Kansas, she needs to go on a journey to the City of Emeralds where the Great Wizard Oz lives. Throughout her journey, she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion. Each of these people desires something from the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy’s problem got solved when she found out about her glass shoe's magic as the Witch Glinda explained to her the shoes is powerful. Dorothy’s friend got what they desired and Dorothy got back to her Aunt Em like nothing happened. The shoes were gone and it was probably lost somewhere for she came back with no shoes on.

This book is really long and it has long paragraphs; therefore, I prefer this to be read by 4th graders and up. The story is really unique and wonderful. If I were to read this in class I have to spread this throughout the week or months because the book is long and the story consists of several journeys to different places. I would need to divide this either by journey or encounter of the main character. The illustration of this book is really realistic. Charles Santore used colored pencils and it is very detailed. I really like the illustrations in this book because it is light colored and very realistic. The illustration relates and partners with the intensity of the story and the mood of the story.

Dia De Los Muertos

Dia De Los Muertos Author: Roseanne Greenfield Thong Illustration: Carles Ballesteros Genre: Multicultural book Grade: 1st grade and up This book is about the Day of the Dead in Spanish. The children throughout the town are getting ready for this celebration. They are decorating with the Spanish vocab words such as sugar skulls, bread, etc. They design the altars with colors and patterns. They also present and play music and have festivals and parades. This is a fun book to read for the Spanish students and Spanish learners because it the story is mixed with Spanish vocab words. The illustration in this book is really colorful and it is graphic drawing. I will read this to the class to explain and show that people have different festivities around the world and that the Day of the Dead is one of them. It is a different cultural tradition and that the students will be excited for it is also celebrated during Halloween.
